Bhagyashree reveals why she initially rejected Maine Pyar Kiya, recalls bonding with Salman Khan: ‘We were like college friends’

Veteran actress Bhagyashree got nostalgic as she revisited memories of Maine Pyar Kiya, her bond with Salman Khan and the film’s unbelievable craze. From revealing why she initially rejected the film to recalling sacks full of fan letters arriving at her home, Bhagyashree opened up about several untold moments from the cult classic.During a recent conversation with Radio Nasha, when the host mentioned that filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya had earlier said Bhagyashree was reluctant to do Maine Pyar Kiya, he asked her, “You said no to Maine Pyar Kiya. Why?”Responding to this, Bhagyashree said, “I was 18. I was attending college and wanted to study further and go abroad. Films were never really on my mind.”She further revealed that she kept giving excuses to avoid signing the film.“I told Sooraj ji that I won’t wear certain kinds of clothes. I told him I had to attend college and could only shoot afterwards. Every time I gave an excuse, he had an answer ready. He would say, ‘We will adjust, but we want only you,’” she shared.

Bhagyashree says Lata Mangeshkar singing for her felt ‘special’

The conversation then shifted to the legendary music of Maine Pyar Kiya, where the host asked how she felt knowing Lata Mangeshkar would sing all the songs for her character.Bhagyashree replied, “Lata ji is from near Sangli, and Sangli is my hometown. So it was extremely special for me.”When asked to pick her favourite song from the film, the actress instantly chose Dil Deewana Bin Sajna Ke and even sang a few lines, leaving everyone smiling.

The host then asked Bhagyashree what her first day with Salman Khan on set was like and how their friendship started.Laughing, Bhagyashree said, “We were like college friends.”She revealed that their first shoot together was the temple scene, though they had already met earlier during a photoshoot and look test at Sooraj Barjatya’s office.

Bhagyashree recreates iconic ‘Dosti ki hai toh nibhana padega’ dialogue

Talking about the iconic dialogue from the film, the host asked Bhagyashree if she ever imagined “Dosti ki hai toh nibhana padega” would become such a huge pop-culture line.Responding to this, the actress said friendship is one bond people choose for themselves.“Other relationships are either by blood or society. But friendship is one relationship we choose ourselves,” she said.She then recreated the iconic line and jokingly added, “Soch ke boliyega… dosti ki hai toh nibhana padega.”

‘Every stair was filled with sacks of letters’

The host also asked Bhagyashree when she realised that Maine Pyar Kiya had become something extraordinary.Recalling the madness after the film’s release, she said, “At that time postmen used to come home. We lived on the first floor and every stair was filled with Santa Claus-like sacks full of letters.”She added that was the moment she realised how deeply audiences had connected with the film and her character Suman.

Bhagyashree praises Riteish and Genelia

Apart from Maine Pyar Kiya, Bhagyashree also spoke about her latest film Raja Shivaji and praised Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza.“I think everybody loves Riteish and Genelia. They are the cutest couple in our film industry,” she said, adding that Riteish had put his “heart and soul” into the film.
