From ghunghat to gavel: How Barmer's ‘Judge Bahu’ Deepu Kanwar defied tradition to become a Civil Judge
Studying behind a traditional ghunghat and balancing family responsibilities, Deepu Kanwar’s journey to the judiciary has become a powerful story of perseverance and support. Her rise from a small-town daughter-in-law to a civil judge challenges long-held social norms and offers inspiration to women pursuing education and careers after marriage.

In many regions of India, there exists the tendency where one believes that women’s dreams need to be put aside once they marry. With the rising burden of household duties, personal ambitions are to be forgotten. Yet, in the Barmer region in Rajasthan, a story of an opposite situation emerges about Deepu Kanwar according to Navbharat Times.Today, she is known as the “Judge Bahu” because she is an example of perseverance, high education, and encouragement of the whole family. Moving from studying with the traditional ghunghat covering her face to a career as a civil judge proves that when talent is recognized, the result may be really impressive.

A dream that never died

Deepu Kanwar was a brilliant and diligent student who excelled not only in academic results but also in sports activities. Like all other little girls, she aspired to success and wanted to prove herself to be an officer. However, the will to study more was strong even after getting married. Nevertheless, success cannot be achieved without the willingness to struggle. Moreover, it also relies on whether or not a person is supported by his/her relatives.

The decision that changed her life

When Deepu got engaged, she was studying for a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree. Her future husband, Lokendra Singh, was studying law.Instead of asking her to limit her ambitions, he encouraged her to study law. This advice changed the direction of her life. Deepu enrolled at K.P. Shah Law College in Jamnagar and began her legal education. It was a step that would eventually take her to the judiciary.

Studying behind the ghunghat

One of the most inspiring images from Deepu’s journey is that of a young daughter-in-law studying behind her ghunghat while preparing for a future many could not imagine. Her success did not come overnight. It took years of dedicated work, perseverance, and discipline to build. Whereas the accomplishment is celebrated, there were years of hard work, study, and preparation that went into the achievement. She thought that education was the key to changing her destiny in life, and never lost sight of that dream.

Family backing proved crucial

An important factor contributing to Deepu’s success was the support that she got from her family. Whereas in many Indian families, the daughter-in-law is expected to attend only to the household chores, Deepu had the benefit of a supportive family. They took her education seriously and backed her. It made all the difference for her.

More than just a personal achievement

Deepu Kanwar’s success is not only about becoming a civil judge. Her journey carries an important message for thousands of young women across villages and small towns. It shows that marriage does not have to end a woman’s education or career aspirations. It also reminds families of the powerful role they can play in helping women achieve their dreams. Many talented women are forced to give up their ambitions because they do not receive support. Deepu’s story shows what becomes possible when that support is available.

An inspiration for a new generation

Today, as Deepu Kanwar takes up the mantle of being a civil judge, she is no less than a symbol of success for everyone. She serves as a role model for all those girls dreaming of furthering their education, all those daughters-in-law aiming at making a career for themselves, and all those families ready to change their perceptions and beliefs. It is the tale of a courageous woman with immense efforts and dedication towards acquiring knowledge. She has proved that when women are encouraged by their families instead of being restricted, they can do wonders.
