IIT Kanpur launches B.Cyber., introduces hackathon-based admissions to train cybersecurity workforce
Seeking to address the growing need for cybersecurity professionals, IIT Kanpur has introduced B.Cyber., a new undergraduate programme focused on digital security and cyber defence. The course combines classroom instruction with practical exposure and will admit students through a specialised process that considers JEE Main scores, prior cybersecurity experience, and performance in a hackathon-based assessment.

Cybersecurity has emerged as one of the fastest-growing fields in the digital economy, and higher education institutions are increasingly looking to bridge the gap between industry demand and academic training. As a response to this problem, IIT Kanpur University recently introduced an innovative undergraduate program named B.Cyber.It is expected to enable its graduates with knowledge and expertise in cybersecurity and protection of vital digital systems. The objective of this project, according to the representatives of IIT Kanpur, is to create future leaders in the area of cybersecurity by means of education and practice.

Focus on real-world cybersecurity challenges

What sets the B.Cyber. program apart from regular classroom training is the strong focus on practical approaches to resolving the issues associated with cybersecurity. Those taking part in the program will have an opportunity to engage in scenarios that are very close to those encountered by modern governments, companies, and technology organizations. With cyber attacks becoming more numerous and sophisticated each day, there is an increased need for specialists capable of spotting and counteracting any possible threats to a company’s or government agency’s digital infrastructure.

Unique admission process for B.Cyber. programme

A major component of the programme is the specialized approach to admission of students into it. Contrary to the regular engineering admission process, which relies entirely on candidates’ results from entrance examinations, for B.Cyber., the process will be slightly different.Firstly, students will have to pass through the process of being pre-selected according to their results from the JEE Main. Students will further be assessed on any previous work and interest shown in cybersecurity in the past.

Hackathon to test practical skills

The shortlisted candidates would need to go through an additional evaluation round that consists of a test and a hackathon. By doing this, the IIT Kanpur seeks to assess the problem-solving skills, technical skills, creativity, and capability to handle cybersecurity problems under real-time situations. This is expected to enable the recruitment of individuals with both academic capabilities and practical skills.

Growing demand for cybersecurity professionals

The introduction of the B.Cyber program comes at a time when cybersecurity has become a major concern nationally and internationally. The rapid digitization process, the growing number of online operations, and the rising digital infrastructure have increased the risk of cyber attacks. It has been mentioned by industry experts several times that there is a lack of skilled personnel in the field of cybersecurity. Hence, education programs targeting cybersecurity have been considered essential.

Building future cybersecurity leaders

With the launch of B.Cyber., IIT Kanpur will be providing a specialized track for students inclined towards cybersecurity even during their college years. The institute plans to groom these students with theoretical knowledge and practical training as well as a process to select those who would excel in the industry in coming years. It is yet another move taken by educational institutions to cater to the growing needs of the tech-driven world.
