Sawan Somwar Vrat 2026: Dos and Don’ts of Fasting For Lord Divine Blessings

For the devotees of Lord Shiva, Sawan Somwar Vrat 2026 is one of the most significant fasts. Sawan is also called Shravan, and it begins on July 30, 2026. The Mondays of this holy month are called Sawan Somwar and are considered very important for the worship of Shiva. Many people observe this fast for emotional strength, stress relief, marriage blessings, family harmony and peace. The fast may seem confusing at first to the uninitiated. But if done diligently and with discipline, it is a simple procedure. 4 Sawan Somwar Vrats will be observed in 2026. The dates are August 3, August 10, August 17, and August 24, 2026.

Step 1: Decide on the way of fasting

Some people take one sattvik meal. Some people do not eat grains, onions, garlic, alcohol, or non-veg food. A very strict fast is not something that beginners should just take up one day. Follow the rules right for your age, health and family tradition. Physical strain gives way to devotion.

Step 2: Wake Up Early and Take a Bath

Wake up early on Sawan Somwar. Wear clean clothes and take a bath. White, yellow, or light-coloured clothes are considered appropriate for the worship of Lord Shiva. Before beginning the ritual, clean your puja space thoroughly. Remove the dust, unused puja items, and old flowers. Keep the environment calm and simple.

Step 3: Take a Simple Sankalp

Take a simple sankalp and sit in front of Lord Shiva. You might say you are fasting for spiritual growth, health and peace. Don’t make overblown promises that you can’t deliver on. The value of a small promise kept honestly is greater than a difficult promise broken later.

Step 4: Offer Jalabhishek to Shivling

Slowly offer clean water to Shivling while chanting “Om Namah Shivaya”. When you can, go to a Shiva temple; if not, you can perform the puja at home. As per the tradition, you can also offer milk, bilva leaves, white flowers, sandalwood, fruits, honey, curd, ghee and akshat. Never offer tulsi leaves to Lord Shiva.

Step 5: Chant Shiva Mantra

Recite “Om Namah Shivaya” 108 times. It’s a simple and powerful mantra. It brings about mental peace and cultivates devotion. Alternatively, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra can be chanted to invoke protection, courage and health.

Step 6: Follow Vrat Food Rules

Suppose you need to eat only vrat-friendly foods during the day. You can have fruits, milk, curd, makhana, sabudana, coconut water, nuts or a simple sattvik meal. Don’t binge after a fast. Eat light and pure.

Step 7: Control Speech and Behaviour

Sawan Somwar Vrat is not only about food. It is also about exercising self-restraint. Do not allow anger, lies, gossip, harsh speech, jealousy, and disrespect to elders to be expressed. Be calm all day long. Listen to bhajans, read the Shiva chalisa or sit quietly for a few minutes.

Step 8: Break the Fast Properly

Eat your meal according to your family’s manner. Many people have a puja in the evening before eating. Offer prayers to Lord Shiva, express gratitude and then eat light food. During your fast break, don’t eat food that is too spicy, oily or heavy.
