Writing on Substack, Shruti revealed that she adopted Aslan around three months ago and was delighted to have him at home. However, within two days, she developed a severe skin reaction, with rashes and boils appearing across her face. She initially thought the problem could be linked to something she had eaten but later consulted her dermatologist and realized that the kitten’s fur and saliva could be triggering the reaction. “It was the most disappointing pit-in-my-stomach kind of dread when I realized it could be Aslan and his spit and fur that’s causing the reaction,” she wrote. Shruti tried several ways to manage the situation, including trimming his hair, using air purifiers, wiping him down, and changing his food, but the allergy continued.

As the health problem began affecting her work, skin, and mental well-being, Shruti realized that keeping Aslan at home was becoming increasingly difficult. She said the symptoms returned strongly after traveling and coming back home. “It started affecting my work and my skin and most of all my state of mind,” she revealed. After another severe reaction, she contacted Aslan’s foster mother and decided to put him up for adoption again. “After trying incessantly, I realized when I returned from Chennai to Mumbai and broke out into allergies all over again and this time even worse that I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life,” Shruti said. She admitted that saying goodbye had been painful, adding, “It’s been so heartbreaking I cannot even begin to describe the guilt and the pain I’m feeling.” She also urged people not to call it a failed adoption.
