A flash-flood warning remained in force across parts of southeastern Ohio into Monday morning after a tornado warning was cancelled late Sunday as severe weather continued across the region.
Storm warning carries 97kmph gusts
At 11.13pm local time, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for eastern Vinton County and parts of southwestern Athens, northwestern Meigs, northeastern Gallia and northeastern Jackson counties. Radar indicated wind gusts of about 97kmph, while forecasters said a tornado remained possible.One minute later, the NWS cancelled the tornado warning for east-central Vinton and west-central Athens counties after the storm weakened below severe limits and no longer appeared likely to generate a tornado.The earlier tornado alert followed the detection of a severe storm near McArthur in Vinton County. Creola and Zaleski were among the communities that forecasters said could be affected as the storm moved east at about 24kmph.
Up to 8.9cm rain recorded
The flash-flood warning covered northeastern Vinton County, southwestern Athens County and northwestern Meigs County and was due to remain in effect until 6.30am Monday.Radar and automated gauges indicated that 6.4cm to 8.9cm of rain had already fallen, with another 2.5cm to 7.6cm possible. McArthur, Albany, Zaleski, Carpenter, Radcliffe and Creola were among the communities covered by the warning.The NWS advised people inside sturdy buildings to use a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor and stay away from windows.
