Nana Patekar‘s career in Indian cinema was built through years of struggle and discipline. The veteran actor and filmmaker passed away at the age of 75 after suffering a severe cardiac arrest at his home in Goa.According to ANI, Nana Patekar was declared dead at 5:20 am. Doctors reportedly tried to revive him for nearly 45 minutes after he was brought to the hospital. However, he did not respond to the treatment.His death brings an end to a career that spanned several decades. During that period, Nana Patekar became known for memorable performances across Hindi and Marathi cinema.

Nana Patekar’s early struggles

Nana Patekar started earning when he was only 13 years old. His childhood and early adulthood involved financial hardship.During his conversation with Siddharth Kannan, the actor recalled a particularly difficult phase. He revealed that there was a period when he survived on one meal a day. His monthly income at the time was around Rs 35. Despite those circumstances, Nana Patekar continued pursuing his interest in acting.He eventually entered the film industry with a negative role in ‘Gaman’. His breakthrough came with ‘Ankush’ in 1986. The film brought him greater recognition and established him as an actor with a distinctive screen presence.

From intense dramas to ‘Welcome’

Nana Patekar became known for performances driven by forceful dialogue delivery and intense expressions. His ability to portray complex and authoritative characters made him a recognisable presence in Hindi cinema.His filmography included ‘Parinda’, ‘Krantiveer’, ‘Agni Sakshi’, ‘Tiranga’, ‘Khamoshi’ and ‘Bhoot’. He frequently portrayed police officers and other authority figures, bringing a strong presence to such roles. He also proved that his range extended beyond serious characters. Nana Patekar’s portrayal of Uday Shetty in ‘Welcome’ became one of his most popular comic performances.He subsequently appeared in films such as ‘Shagird’, ‘Taxi No. 9211’ and ‘Ab Tak Chhappan’. These projects further demonstrated his ability to move between different genres and character types.

Nana Patekar’s army connection

Nana Patekar’s association with the armed forces extended beyond his screen roles. In 1990, he joined the Indian Territorial Army. His military experience also influenced his preparation for ‘Prahaar: The Final Attack’. Nana Patekar underwent three years of army training for his role as a Major and worked with General VK Singh during the process.His connection with the armed forces continued during the Kargil War in 1999. He reportedly stepped away from acting and contributed alongside the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment.

‘Natsamrat’ and Marathi cinema

Marathi cinema remained an important part of Nana Patekar’s career. In 2016, he starred in ‘Natsamrat’, playing a retired stage actor whose life changes after he leaves the world of theatre.The film also featured Vikram Gokhale and Medha Manjrekar. Nana Patekar’s performance received considerable appreciation and became one of the defining roles of his later career. ‘Natsamrat’ allowed him to combine his understanding of acting and theatre with an emotionally demanding character. His contribution to Indian cinema was also recognised with three National Film Awards.Nana Patekar remained active in films even after establishing a career that spanned generations. His final film appearances included ‘Subedaar’ and ‘O Romeo’, both released in early 2026.
