Quote of the Day from the Bible, 26 October 2026: When Fear Controls Your Decisions, Remember the Strength Described in 2 Timothy 1:7
In the message of 2 Timothy 1:7, the Apostle Paul reminds Timothy that divine strength and love conquer fear. As Timothy navigates his leadership role in Ephesus, he is called to meet challenges directly with courageous love and discernment. This passage stresses the importance of confronting unpleasant tasks head-on, encouraging a faithful response even when fear may arise.

A job application sits half-finished for weeks. A difficult phone call to a parent keeps getting postponed. Fear rarely shouts. More often it just quietly says “not yet”.2 Timothy 1:7 speaks directly to that hesitation:“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”Paul reminds a young leader that timidity does not come from God.

A Letter From Prison

Paul wrote this letter from a Roman prison near the end of his life. Timothy, his younger co-worker, was leading the church in Ephesus under real pressure. In an earlier letter, Paul had asked the Corinthians to make sure Timothy could be among them without fear. He seems to have been naturally cautious.

Fear Here Means Timidity

The Greek word translated “fear” points to cowardice or shrinking back. It describes the kind of fear that makes someone pull away from what they know is right.Healthy caution is different. Checking the brakes before a long drive is wise. Avoiding a necessary conversation for months is something else entirely.

Power Shaped by Love

God gives power, Paul says. Yet that power sits right beside love.So courage in this verse is never harsh. A manager who finally addresses a team member’s poor behaviour can be firm and kind in the same conversation.

A Sound Mind

The final phrase is often translated as self-discipline. It suggests clear thinking that stays steady under pressure.Fear tends to blur judgement. A sound mind weighs the real risks and sets the imagined ones aside.Write down the decision being avoided. Next to it, note the worst realistic outcome and then the first small step.

The Deeper Meaning of 2 Timothy 1:7

In the verse before, Paul urges Timothy to stir up the gift of God within him. The picture is of a fire that needs fanning to be rekindled.Verse 8 follows with a call not to be ashamed of the testimony of the Lord. Courage, then, has a purpose. It serves faithfulness.Fear may still be felt. It simply does not get to hold the steering wheel.
