A decade later, discussions around a third instalment are reportedly underway, and the lead role is said to have already been finalised. According to the reports, Sujoy aims to keep the franchise’s essence intact while giving ‘Kahaani 3’ a new identity.
Yami Gautam to headline an all-new story
According to Pinkvilla, ‘Kahaani 3’ is a new story. The idea is to take the franchise forward while retaining the essence of the world that audiences have loved. Yami Gautam is coming on board as the lead, and the character has a very strong arc. The film is still in pre-production, and the team is working on the shooting timeline. Sujoy has a very clear vision for the Kahaani world. He is working closely with the team to ensure that the third film feels fresh but still carries the soul of the franchise. There is a lot of excitement about collaborating with Yami.
Vidya Balan’s ‘Kahaani’ set the tone
Released in 2012, ‘Kahaani’ centres on Vidya Bagchi, a pregnant woman on a quest to track down her husband after he goes missing. Helping her along the way are Assistant Sub-Inspector Satyoki Sinha, played by Parambrata Chatterjee, and Inspector General A. Khan, portrayed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. As the investigation unfolds, Satyoki, referred to as Rana, uncovers the truth: Vidya’s identity and pregnancy were both staged. In reality, her husband, who served in the army, had died in a gas attack on the metro, and she had orchestrated the entire plan to avenge his death.
‘Kahaani 2’ brought a fresh story for Vidya Balan
The sequel takes the story in an entirely new direction. Here, Vidya takes on the role of Vidya Sinha, also known as Durga, who is determined to save her adopted daughter, Minnie. Durga takes on numerous challenges and pushes past several hurdles to ensure the well-being of her child. Rounding out the cast of ‘Kahaani 2’ are Arjun Rampal and Tunisha Sharma.

Meanwhile, Yami is currently busy filming ‘Nayyi Navelli’, an upcoming supernatural folklore drama directed by Balaji Mohan. A release date hasn’t been locked in yet.
