James Gunn says Margot Robbie ‘may be over’ playing Harley Quinn, raising doubts about her return to the DC role

DC Studios boss James Gunn has cast doubt on Margot Robbie’s future as Harley Quinn. The 60-year-old filmmaker said the actress “may be over” playing the character, even as he made it clear that he still loves her in the role.

What James Gunn said on the podcast

James Gunn appeared on ‘The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast’, where he spoke about whether the film belongs to the DCU. He said, “That settles it then. I think that The Suicide Squad is within the canon of the DCU. It’s decided. I’d say we have one small asterisk, which is what exactly is the future of Harley Quinn? I want to be given a little leeway with this by the fans because I’m not sure exactly how that’s going to manifest itself. But other than that, I think that we can pretty much say the entire movie is canon. I don’t think there’s a problem.”

Margot Robbie’s journey as Harley Quinn

The 36-year-old actress first played Harley Quinn in ‘Suicide Squad’ in 2016 and returned to the role in ‘Birds of Prey’ in 2020. Gunn’s latest remark now raises questions about whether she will step into the character again. The filmmaker noted that Margot has become the “biggest female star in the world” since she first appeared as Harley Quinn.

James Gunn is a fan but unsure about a comeback

James Gunn is clearly an admirer of the actress, yet he doubts she will come back. He said, “She’s just so crazy. I love her as Harley. I don’t know if she wants to play Harley again. She may be over that.”

Gunn’s DC casting calls draw attention

This is not the first time the filmmaker has made a bold statement about casting legacy characters in the DC universe. His time at DC Studios has also had its share of controversy, particularly the Superman role passing from Henry Cavill to David Corenswet.
