John Wick star Keanu Reeves offered a stranger a 15-minute Zoom date during Covid; the unusual fundraiser was organised to help a children's cancer charity after its biggest annual event was cancelled

Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves found an unusual way to support children battling cancer during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The John Wick star offered a private 15-minute Zoom conversation to the highest bidder as part of an online fundraising initiative organised by Camp Rainbow Gold, an Idaho-based charity supporting children diagnosed with cancer and their families. The initiative came after the organisation was forced to cancel its biggest annual fundraising event, the Share Your Heart Ball, with just 48 hours’ notice because of the pandemic. With traditional fundraising opportunities disrupted, the charity turned to online bidding and invited celebrities and businesses to contribute experiences that supporters could compete to win.

Keanu Reeves offered a private 15-minute Zoom conversation

The experience, titled 15 Minutes of Fame with Keanu Reeves, gave one successful bidder the opportunity to speak privately with the actor over Zoom. According to Camp Rainbow Gold’s announcement on June 11, 2020, Reeves was willing to share a virtual glass of wine, tell stories, answer questions and even teach a few karate moves during the conversation. The offer was part of the charity’s Shine for Camp online fundraising initiative. The organisation described the opportunity as a chance to connect with the actor from home, at a time when pandemic restrictions had made in-person meetings difficult. The call was scheduled for the week beginning July 6, 2020, at a mutually agreed time.

Covid forced the charity to cancel its biggest annual fundraiser

Camp Rainbow Gold had planned to hold its annual Share Your Heart Ball, one of its primary fundraising events, but the rapidly spreading coronavirus forced it to call off the event just two days before it was due to take place. The cancellation created a major challenge for the Idaho nonprofit. Its executive director, Elizabeth Lizberg, said the organisation quickly recognised that other charities were also moving their fundraising activities online. The team decided to create an online fundraiser featuring experiences and contributions from celebrities, businesses and other supporters. The initiative was designed to raise money while offering people a way to connect and participate in fundraising without meeting in person.

Bidding for the Keanu Reeves experience crossed $16,000

The opportunity to spend 15 minutes with Reeves attracted considerable attention. When Entertainment Tonight reported on the initiative on June 16, 2020, the highest bid had reached $16,200. A day later, CNN reported that bidding had climbed to $16,600, with the offer initially carrying an estimated value of $10,000.The bidding was scheduled to close on June 22, 2020. The money raised through the initiative was intended to support Camp Rainbow Gold and its work with children diagnosed with cancer and their families.

Other celebrities also contributed to the online fundraiser

Reeves was not the only entertainer who offered a personal experience for the charity’s online initiative. Singer Ally Brooke, formerly of Fifth Harmony, contributed a private 15-minute Zoom mini-concert. Voice actor Rob Paulsen offered a one-hour experience in which the winner could get advice on voice acting, along with signed merchandise and a recorded voicemail message. The fundraiser also featured contributions from businesses and other supporters, including holiday and travel experiences. The mix of celebrity encounters and other offerings helped the charity move its fundraising efforts online after the cancellation of its annual event.

What Camp Rainbow Gold does for children with cancer

Camp Rainbow Gold is an Idaho-based nonprofit whose work centres on providing emotionally empowering experiences for children diagnosed with cancer and their families. Its programmes have included camps and activities for young patients, their siblings and family members. The organisation’s work also recognises that a cancer diagnosis affects more than the child receiving treatment. By creating opportunities for children and families to spend time together and connect with others facing similar circumstances, the charity aims to provide support beyond medical care. The pandemic disrupted the organisation’s usual activities and fundraising plans, but it continued working to reach the families it served. The online fundraiser featuring Reeves was one of the ways it sought to keep that support going during an exceptionally difficult period.
