Kathy Griffin stunned fans after posting what appeared to be a new relationship reveal on social media with a significantly younger man, only to reveal the entire scenario was staged as a social experiment. The 65-year-old comedian shared a photo of herself hand-in-hand with an unidentified man she identified as 22 years old, captioning the post simply: “He’s 22. Have at it, internet.”The post immediately generated a huge response across social media, where users commented on the age gap love story. However, Griffin quickly followed up with a clarifying statement explaining the true nature of her post.“You Guys! Thanks to all those who participated in my social media sociological experiment! No, I’m not dating this 22-year-old. He was helping me with security during my trip to NYC. But… what if I were? The reactions were fascinating,” Griffin wrote, revealing that the entire scenario was designed to test how social media users would respond to such a relationship announcement.

The social experiment and platform differences

Griffin elaborated on her observations from the experiment, noting stark differences in how various platforms responded. She described reactions on Instagram as mostly positive, while other platforms produced significantly more critical responses. “Older men have been dating younger women since the beginning of time… Just ask Luke Wilson, 54, who just had a beautiful baby with his 24-year-old girlfriend,” she pointed out in defence of her hypothetical scenario.Griffin went on to reference other high-profile relationships with significant age gaps. “Or Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, or Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, Jay-Z and Beyonce… some of the most long-lasting beautiful relationships in my beloved (though ageist and sexist) industry,” she wrote, suggesting that society applies different standards to age-gap relationships depending on gender dynamics. She concluded her statement with characteristic humour: “Relax… just a little harmless fun.”

Past relationship posts and social media patterns

According to news. com, this was not the first time in recent weeks that Griffin had posted about a relationship on social media without identifying the man involved. In mid-May, she posted a photograph of herself with an unknown man who appeared closer to her in age, writing: “We’re insta official. Deal with it.” That earlier post has since been deleted, suggesting the relationship did not continue or was similarly temporary in nature.

Kathy Griffin’s dating history

Griffin has been publicly open about her romantic preferences for younger men. In December of last year, she wrote an article revealing that she had fallen romantically involved with a 23-year-old following her 2025 separation from ex-husband Randy Bick, who at 47 was almost two decades younger than Griffin herself, as per the outlet.“I accidentally fell in love with a 23-year-old. Because of his age, he didn’t have the usual sexism, misogyny, and biases that guys my age tend to have. He seemed to see me. I know that sounds really corny. Oh God, it sounds so lame! But I felt really comfortable with him, and I felt very content just hanging out,” Griffin confessed about that relationship. However, she acknowledged that the reality of their age difference ultimately made the relationship unsustainable. “I knew he was too young when he told me he never wanted to have kids and that he could be with me forever. And I was like: ‘You don’t know that. You’re 23. You have no idea,'” she recalled. “So I had to set that dove free,” she concluded, reflecting on the difficult decision to end the romance despite their genuine connection. The comedian’s willingness to publicly discuss her dating life and relationship preferences has made her a frequent subject of social media discussion, with her recent social experiment generating widespread conversation about age, relationships and societal double standards in the entertainment industry.
