Before anything else goes on the stove for Mahagauri, reach for the nutmeg. The Goddess is said to favour it, so it belongs in the halwa, the sweet pudding served on her plate alongside puri, chana, and kheer. The same food is served to the girls invited for Kanya Pujan, the worship of young girls as manifestations of the Goddess. Her day is Monday, 19 October 2026, Durga Ashtami, which ends around 10:51 AM in Delhi. Check your local Panchang for the timings applicable to your location.

Why Unmarried Girls Turn to Her

Unmarried girls of marriageable age who are fasting are traditionally encouraged to worship Mahagauri, and this worship is considered particularly auspicious for marriage. The belief is linked to Sita, who is said to have worshipped the Goddess with great devotion and received a husband like Lord Ram.This is a devotional belief, not a guarantee.

White for the Goddess, Peacock Green for the Day

Mahagauri’s favourite colour is white, and wearing white or light grey while worshipping her is considered highly beneficial. Most daily colour lists recommend peacock green for 19 October, though some differ. Green is the calendar’s colour for the day; white is the Goddess’s own. Follow your household’s tradition or choose to honour her favourite colour. Neither choice is a rule you can fail.Astrologically, Mahagauri is said to govern Rahu, the shadow planet, and worshipping her is believed to alleviate Rahu-related troubles. One teaching also holds that the chakras associated with Mahagauri and Siddhidatri lie outside the body. This teaching is intended for yoga and Tantra practitioners who have attained siddhi, or spiritual accomplishment, through work on the seven chakras. It should be learnt directly from a guru.
