That gap is exactly where the MG M9 has arrived, and it is taking the segment by a storm! Luxury and efficiency, that’s some combo, right?

First impressions matter

The car is big. Over 5.2 metres long, with a 3.2 metre wheelbase that puts it ahead of every competitor in the segment. It has a wide, upright front end, clean body lines and sharp LED lighting that give it a presence without shouting for attention. It looks like a car that carries important people. Which, frankly, is what this segment is all about.

Second Row is the star

Forget the driver’s seat for a moment. The real story of the M9 starts when you climb into the second row. MG calls these Presidential Seats and the name holds up. Each seat has 16-way power adjustment, heating, ventilation, an extendable leg rest and eight massage modes. Everything is controlled through an armrest that feels like something out of a premium business lounge. If you have ever sat in a proper business class cabin on a long flight and thought, this is how every journey should feel, then you already understand what MG is going for here. It is the real ‘Boardroom on Wheels’. The third row, which is often the forgotten child in large MPVs, has been given proper thought too. Space is generous, access is easy and nobody is going to be folded in half for a long drive. Above the cabin, a large dual sunroof setup runs front to rear. The rear is a panoramic dual pane unit. The cabin feels open, and the light it lets in makes a real difference.Materials throughout are luxurious. Brown leather, suede inserts, soft-touch panels and clean trim finishes. Nothing garish. Nothing that feels like it is trying too hard.

A feature-rich cabin

Inside, you get a 12.23 inch touchscreen for infotainment, a 7 inch digital display for the driver and dedicated screens for rear passengers. The JBL audio system runs 13 speakers including a subwoofer and amplifier. Ambient lighting offers 64 colours. Wireless charging, connected car technology and multiple USB ports come as standard.

None of this is unusual for the segment. What is unusual is getting all of it at this price. Rs 75.90 lakh, ex-showroom!

Quiet, smooth and surprisingly capable to drive

Because the M9 is fully electric, the driving experience is unlike any diesel MPV. There is no engine rumble, no vibration and no turbo lag when the driver puts their foot down. The motor produces 245 PS and 350 Nm, which is more than enough for a vehicle of this size.

The suspension has been tuned heavily towards comfort. Speed bumps, potholes and highway imperfections are dealt with quietly. The focus is entirely on keeping the people in the back happy.

The range question, answered

The M9 runs on a 90 kWh NMC battery and is MIDC-certified for 548 km on a single charge. For someone doing city commutes, that is three or four days of driving without plugging in. For longer trips, Delhi to Jaipur or Mumbai to Pune can be done without any range anxiety.

DC fast charging takes the battery from 30 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. MG also bundles an 11 kW wall box charger with standard installation and a portable backup charger. The home charging setup is sorted from day one.Running costs are another consideration worth thinking about. Electricity versus petrol or diesel, over a full year of ownership, depreciation benefit over the years and decent annual mileage, the savings are not small. Petrol and diesel prices have only moved in one direction since the Middle East unrest. Electricity, by comparison, is far more stable and significantly cheaper per kilometre.

Safety that is globally certified

The M9 carries five-star ratings from both EURO NCAP and ANCAP. That is two of the most respected crash testing programmes in the world. The body uses ultra high strength steel throughout. Seven airbags, Level 2 ADAS and a driver monitoring system is also part of the package. There is also a 360-degree camera to help navigate what is a fairly large vehicle in city conditions.

One detail worth calling out: the M9 rides on Continental ContiSeal tyres. These are self-sealing, meaning a small puncture gets sealed automatically without you needing to stop. For a car that is often driven by a chauffeur, this kind of reliability matters more than people might think.

Verdict: Should you consider the MG M9

The strongest case for the MG M9 is simple. It gives you most of what a luxury MPV worth more than a crore offers. Presidential rear seats, an electric powertrain with credible range, five-star global safety ratings, a luxurious cabin, a loaded feature list and a road presence.

The timing is interesting. Since its launch, the M9 has quietly emerged as one of the stronger players in the premium MPV space, crossing over 2,000 units in less than 10 months.
