Florian Zeller’s psychological thriller, ‘Bunker’, starring the real-life couple Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, received an extended standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday.After the screening, the director and star cast had the audience on their feet applauding them for around 15 minutes after the film’s premiere show.The warm reception left both actors in tears. Cruz was seen struggling to hold back tears as she kissed her husband and co-star, while Bardem who was visibly overwhelmed at the response.Cruz also stopped to shake hands with fellow audience members, and mouthed “Thank you!” to the audience as the applause passed the 10-minute mark.Directed by Florian Zeller, ‘Bunker’ stars Cruz and Bardem as a married couple and explores the personal and moral consequences of a decision that places them at the intersection of wealth, technology and growing fears about the future.

“‘Bunker’ touches on several times contemporary themes — fear of the future, ecological threats, rising social inequality, and rampant individualism — but it does so through a deeply personal lens: a couple struggling with each other,” Zeller said in his director’s statement.“I wanted to explore love, fidelity and forgiveness while placing the audience in a position of deliberate ambiguity,” he added.Zeller said he wrote the film specifically for Cruz and Bardem, having been inspired by a real story he had read. The pair have appeared together in several films over the years, beginning with the 1992 Spanish film Jamón, Jamón.“I think they are among the greatest actors working today,” Zeller said, explaining that casting the couple also offered a distinctive opportunity to explore the dynamics of a relationship on screen.
Penélope Cruz praises bilingual representation
Bunker is filmed in both English and Spanish, something Cruz said she particularly appreciated about the project. The story follows a family who has moved from Madrid to London with their children. Although they live in London, the family speaks Spanish at home, allowing the film to portray a bilingual household in an authentic way.“It’s amazing how much that has changed,” Cruz said, referring to the increasing representation of bilingual families on screen.
Florian Zeller returns to Venice with Bunker
Bunker is playing in competition at Venice alongside films including Wild Horse Nine and Ink, putting Zeller’s latest work among the titles being considered as potential awards contenders from this year’s festival lineup.Zeller previously made his feature directorial debut with ‘The Father’, starring Anthony Hopkins. The film earned Hopkins the Academy Award for Best Actor, while Zeller and Christopher Hampton won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.In ‘Bunker’, Cruz and Bardem are joined by Paul Dano, Stephen Graham and Patrick Schwarzenegger.The movie is also expected to have a theatrical run in 2026 as it begins its awards-season campaign.
