Prince Harry’s highly anticipated reunion with King Charles III is unlikely to catalyse the repair of his fractured relationship with Prince William, according to multiple royal experts who assessed the dynamics within the royal family. The Duke of Sussex is scheduled to visit the United Kingdom in July alongside his wife Meghan Markle and their two children, marking their first family trip to Britain since 2022.However, Page Six reported Monday that royal commentators remain pessimistic about the possibility of reconciliation between the two brothers during this visit. Amanda Matta, co-host of the podcast “Off With Their Headlines,” told the publication that concluding a potential reconciliation between Harry and William at this stage would be premature.

Amanda Matta on the ‘most strained’ relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry

Matta characterised the relationship between William and Harry as the “most strained” among all the family dynamics currently at play within the royal household. She pointed to William’s current positioning within the monarchy as a complicating factor in any potential reconciliation efforts.“William is also seeking to project strength and leadership these days, which often results in press briefings that he has opposed the king’s handling of emotionally charged issues like Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and now, Harry’s potential return,” Matta explained to the publication.According to Matta’s assessment, the path toward reconciliation would require William to adopt a different approach than he has taken in recent years. “For the brothers to bury the hatchet, William needs to approach the situation pragmatically rather than emotionally,” she said. “Sort of the opposite of King Charles’ approach. William has been the holdout for years, viewing Harry’s betrayal as unforgivable.”

Emily Nash’s perspective on Prince William and Prince Harry’s unlikely reunion

Royal reporter Emily Nash offered a similarly cautious outlook regarding the possibility of the brothers meeting during Harry’s visit. “I certainly wouldn’t expect anything to happen on this visit,” Nash told the outlet, though she acknowledged the possibility of unexpected developments.Nash suggested that a reunion between William and Harry would require specific circumstances to occur. “If it was part of a wider family gathering, it’s possible they could be at the same place at the same time. But, you know, given the very fractious nature of the relationship between William and Harry, I don’t see them rushing to spend time together just because Harry’s back in the UK,” she said.Regarding King Charles’s potential role in facilitating reconciliation between his two sons, Nash indicated that the reigning monarch appears focused on his own objectives. “I think he probably is just focused on his own moment of spending time with the son he’s not seen for a long time, especially potentially meeting his grandchildren. I’m sure that’s probably his primary focus right now,” Nash said.

The conditions necessary for reconciliation

Matta suggested that a private meeting between William and Harry would serve as a meaningful indicator of progress. “If there were to be a private meeting between William and Harry, this would be a clear signal that lines of communication are being reopened,” she said. However, Nash cautioned against expecting rapid changes in the family dynamics. “These things have to happen step by step. When things have been as difficult and as estranged as they have been in that family, I wouldn’t expect things to change overnight,” the reporter noted.

Details of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s upcoming visit

Harry and Meghan welcomed Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to the United Kingdom for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022, but have not returned since. Meghan herself hasn’t been on British soil since attending the funeral of the late Queen in September 2022.King Charles has invited the Sussexes to sleep at a royal house during their stay and will arrange their security, reports say. The move signals a radical change in the family’s stance in the public eye, as Harry and Meghan lost their security clearance after leaving their royal roles in 2020.The upcoming visit is one such opportunity for King Charles to spend time with his youngest grandchildren, and also an impetus to keep himself connected to his younger son, knowing the stress that exists in the wider family.
