R Madhavan grows produce at home, calls it 'extremely rewarding' and shares 7 organic gardening tips: 'My terrace garden takes care of almost 70 per cent of my seasonal vegetables requirements'

Beyond his acting career, R. Madhavan has quietly built a genuine passion for growing his own food. On the terrace of his Mumbai home, he practices organic gardening, successfully cultivating a range of vegetables, while also taking on a larger agricultural project in Tamil Nadu, converting dry, unused land into a thriving coconut plantation. His gardening journey began around 2014, when he first started experimenting with vegetables and fruits on his balcony, and he believes that even growing a single vegetable can teach people just how much effort truly goes into farming.

R. Madhavan on why gardening became rewarding

Madhavan first turned to organic farming during a period when he had extra time at home while working on a script. In a 2017 conversation with TOI, he explained that growing concerns around the nutritional value of modern produce, along with the spread of genetic modification, were what initially sparked his interest in more natural growing methods. That curiosity soon led him into research, which gradually evolved into a hands-on gardening habit. What started as a way to pass time eventually became a meaningful part of his everyday life. “I was working on a script and used to stay at home a lot. So, I used this time to read up on organic farming and I must say, it has been extremely rewarding. My terrace garden takes care of almost 70 per cent of my seasonal vegetables requirements. I use just about 1/20th of water that is usually needed through drip irrigation. Especially at times like this, when the state is reeling under the effects of the drought, this is a great way to sustain yourself,” he shared.

From tomatoes to broccoli: Madhavan grows a variety of vegetables

Over the years, Madhavan has grown a wide variety of produce at home, including lady’s finger, aubergine, broccoli, tomatoes, cucumber and other seasonal crops. He strongly believes that everyone should attempt growing at least one vegetable themselves, arguing that only through preparing soil, sowing seeds, watering plants and protecting them from pests can one truly appreciate the effort farmers put into food production. Sustainability sits at the core of his approach — rather than treating his garden as purely decorative, he’s turned it into a genuine, functional source of food for his household, all while staying mindful of water and resource conservation. His farming interests extend well beyond his terrace too, with his coconut plantation project in Tamil Nadu reflecting a passion that goes far past a few potted plants at home.

R. Madhavan’s 7 simple steps to grow vegetables at home

For those looking to start their own vegetable garden, Madhavan has shared some simple, practical tips drawn from his own experience:1. Begin with good organic soil: According to Madhavan, soil quality should be the first priority before planting anything. He recommends using relatively clean soil mixed with river-bed soil for the best results.2. Pick organic seeds carefully: Sourcing high-quality organic seeds is essential, Madhavan notes, recalling how he originally sourced his first batch from Europe, even though several of those varieties actually originated in India.3. Explore local sourcing options: Villagers and farmers often maintain their own stocks of organic seeds, making them a valuable local resource. For those without such access, Madhavan suggests looking online instead.4. Ensure sufficient sunlight: Once seeds are planted, adequate sunlight becomes essential for healthy growth, so plants should be positioned where they can receive proper light exposure.5. Maintain good air circulation: Proper airflow is equally important, as cramped or poorly ventilated spaces can prevent plants from thriving.6. Avoid overwatering: More water doesn’t necessarily mean healthier plants — Madhavan advises beginners to water mindfully based on actual plant needs rather than excess.7. Shield young plants from harm: Newly sprouted shoots are particularly vulnerable to pests like rats, so covering plants during this early stage helps them grow safely. For Madhavan, the rewards of gardening go well beyond fresh vegetables at home. His terrace farming allows him to grow a significant share of his seasonal produce while keeping water usage in check, proving that starting a vegetable garden doesn’t require acres of land — a simple balcony or terrace is enough to begin.

R. Madhavan on the work front

On the professional front, Madhavan’s latest release, GDN, failed to make much of an impact at the box office. Prior to that, he featured in the hit spy thriller franchise Dhurandhar, which went on to become one of the year’s biggest successes.
