Radhika Apte has always approached her work and life on her own terms, and her Mumbai home reflects much of that personality. In a 2018 episode of Asian Paints’ Where The Heart Is, the actor opened the doors to her colourful home and spoke about moving to Mumbai, her love for natural light, vintage furniture and colourful doors. Four years later, in a 2022 Brut India house tour, Apte offered another glimpse into her home, discussing food, travel, acting and life in Mumbai.

Radhika Apte’s 2018 home tour offered a glimpse into her colourful Mumbai house

In 2018, Radhika Apte featured in an episode of Asian Paints’ Where The Heart Is Season 2, giving viewers a detailed look inside her Mumbai home. The actor spoke about her journey from being an outsider in Mumbai to gradually making the city her home while pursuing acting. At the time, Apte described the house as a work in progress, with high ceilings, plenty of natural light, plants, colourful doors and a mix of vintage and contemporary furniture.Apte also revealed that her husband, British avant-garde composer and violist Benedict Taylor, encouraged her to move to Mumbai and pursue acting. Speaking during the home tour, she said, “Benedict, who’s now my husband, gave me the courage because he knew a lot of people in Bombay and said, just let’s go to Bombay and try and make this happen.”She added, “He has a great sense of which house to live in because he looks at the light and he’s better at imagining what the house could be turned into. I’m better at turning it into that thing.”For Apte, natural light was one of the most important considerations while choosing a home. “When you wake up, you need to have light in your house. So I always look for houses where there is going to be enough light,” she said.

Radhika Apte’s colourful doors became a signature feature of her home

One of the most distinctive elements of Apte’s home was its colourful doors. She explained that the idea came from a teacher whose fans were painted in different colours.“Then my teacher in school used to paint her fans with different colours. Which I still want to do, but I’m still contemplating exactly what colour and when. But instead of that, I started painting my doors with different colours,” Apte said.“So I have different coloured doors. So if somebody asks me, can I use your loo, I go, purple door. So yeah, I think lots of borrowed ideas.”The house also featured green plants, warm furniture and a mix of pieces with personal significance. In the 2018 tour, Apte spoke about how certain objects in her home were inherited from her grandmother and parents.

Family furniture and memories hold a special place in Radhika Apte’s home

Apte’s approach to furniture was deeply sentimental. She revealed that several small pieces in her home had belonged to her family.“I got some pieces of furniture that belonged to my grandmother, my parents. Small, small pieces like a chair or a stool,” she said. She also showed a chair that had been specially made and explained why it was particularly meaningful to her mother.“This chair is very special because we got this chair made. This was actually one of the first pieces of furniture that I got made with my own money. Mostly because my mum loves it. She finds it extremely perfect to sit on this and extremely comfortable. It’s her spot.”Another piece of furniture reminded her of her grandmother. “As I explained to you that I hold memories and I can’t let go of things. And this is something that I never let go. It reminds me of her. The smell of the wood reminds me of her. Sometimes the dust on it reminds me of her.”

Radhika Apte’s balcony was her favourite spot to unwind

The actor’s home also had a balcony that she had incorporated into the living space. Apte described it as one of the most important areas of the house, particularly because of the breeze and the opportunity to sit there with a cup of tea.“This used to be a balcony which we’ve taken in. And this is one of my favourite spots because I opened this completely. And there’s such a great, lovely breeze that comes in, in spite of it being Bombay,” she said.“And in monsoons, it’s even better. So I get my tea, my night teas happen here with this light on. So I think this space is just one of the most important spaces for me.”Her bedroom also featured a full-length mirror, which she said helped make the space feel bigger by reflecting light.
