Recalling her divorce from businessman Ashwin Ramkumar, Soundarya said her parents became her biggest source of strength. Speaking in a conversation with Pooja Talwar, she explained that the bond between parents and children becomes stronger as life moves forward, especially during difficult moments. “The first man a woman has in her life is her father, and her first friend is her mother. As children grow, that bond becomes stronger and stronger. During my difficult time, my parents stood by me like a rock. I could not have gone through it without them,” she said. Soundarya also made it clear that the end of her first marriage did not make her lose faith in marriage itself.

Soundarya said she eventually understood that the failure of one relationship should not be seen as a rejection of the institution of marriage. “When my first marriage failed, it did not make me stop believing in marriage. It was simply the wrong relationship. I took some time to come out of it and heal, but I could not wait forever to enter that bond again because I believe in it,” she said. Soundarya added that she believes in a relationship where both partners are openly committed to each other. She also expressed happiness about finding love again and being married once more.

The filmmaker also spoke about how her understanding of love has evolved with age and how she has seen a similar change in her parents. “I think the generation we grew up in had a lot more male dominance at home. I can see that changing in my parents now, which was not the case earlier,” she said. Soundarya explained that what felt like love to her at 20 is not necessarily the same at 40. She also shared the principle she follows in her marriage: “You come halfway, I come halfway. It is never ‘my way’ or ‘your way’. That is how we live.” Her comments offer a personal look at how relationships can evolve through different stages of life.
