H. Vinoth reveals why Vijay's character was named 'TVK' aka 'Thalapathy Vetri Kondan' in 'Jana Nayagan'

Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ is still making rounds among fans even weeks after its release. And one of the most talked-about topics is the actor’s character name, Thalapathy Vetri Kondan (TVK). The abbreviation instantly reminded many of Vijay’s political party, and they wondered if it was a deliberate lift. While fans celebrated the reference in theatres, others questioned the creative decision behind it. Director H. Vinoth has now broken his silence and explained why he deliberately chose the name, revealing that it was part of the film’s creative evolution during the scripting stage.

H. Vinoth desired to see Vijay as a leader

Explaining the idea behind the name in an interview with Galatta, H. Vinoth said the character was initially written differently before Vijay entered politics. “During our early story discussions, there was a tattoo-related sequence in the script. We wanted to make that portion more interesting. Around the same time, Vijay launched his political party under the name TVK. That made us think differently. Instead of presenting him only as Thalapathy, we wanted to portray him as a leader,” he said. The director added that this thought naturally influenced the character’s identity and gave the film an additional emotional connection for Vijay’s fans.

H Vinoth explains the reason

Vinoth further explained that the name was carefully designed to suit both the story and the political backdrop. “That is why we named the character Thalapathy Vetri Kondan. Its short form in English is TVK. Since the word ‘Vetri’ means victory, the name also sounds like that of a political movement. We believed fans would enjoy the reference and connect with it instantly. That is exactly why we selected the name for Vijay’s character,” he said. His clarification has now ended the speculation over whether the similarity was accidental, confirming that the choice was a conscious creative decision.

‘Jana Nayagan’ marks Vijay’s final film after political journey

Directed by H. Vinoth, ‘Jana Nayagan’ also stars Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Narain with Vijay in the lead role. The action drama features music by Anirudh Ravichander and was promoted as Vijay’s final film before his full-time political journey. The film, which received a mixed response from critics, went on to become a major commercial success and is one of the most successful Tamil releases of the year, with discussions about its political references continuing even after its theatrical run.
